The organization has an annual budget of approximately $30m annually, employee approximately 300 team members, serves approximately 6,000 community members, and is committed to empowering people to transform their lives and communities. By offering a wide range of services, including reentry programs, behavioral health services, and support for seniors and families, Volunteers of America Oregon is dedicated to promoting self-sufficiency, resilience, and hope. Volunteers of America Oregon was founded in 1987, making it one of the oldest nonprofits organizations in Oregon, and is an affiliate of Volunteers of America, which was founded in 1896 as a faith-based nonprofit, has programs in 46 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, and serves more than 1.5 million people a year.
OVERVIEW OF THE PRESIDENT/CEO ROLE:
The President/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the key leadership position at Volunteers of America Oregon, responsible for the overall strategic planning, management, and operations of the organization. Selected by the Board of Directors, the President/CEO is tasked with carrying out the mission and vision of Volunteers of America Oregon, ensuring the organization operates with the highest level of programmatic and fiscal integrity. The President/CEO will guide the organization towards long-term sustainability, influence policy, and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including employees, board members, donors, partners, volunteers, clients, and the wider community.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRESIDENT/CEO:
Strategic Leadership and Vision
• Develop and implement a clear, forward-looking strategy and vision for the organization.
• Lead the organization in setting and achieving long-term goals, objectives, and policies aligned with the mission and vision of Volunteers of America Oregon.
• Adapt and respond to changes in the nonprofit landscape, ensuring the organization remains relevant and impactful.
• Inspire and cultivate a collaborative and high-performance culture across all levels of the organization, fostering leadership development and professional growth within the team.
Board Engagement and Governance
• Engage and collaborate with the Board of Directors, providing them with accurate, up-to-date information, strategic advice, and recommendations on key issues and opportunities.
• Facilitate effective board governance and actively contribute to the recruitment and development of a diverse, engaged, and inclusive Board.
• Ensure the organization operates within the purview of the board bylaws and at the direction of the Board of Directors, maintaining clear communication and accountability.
Financial and Operational Oversight
• In partnership with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), provide top-level fiscal oversight to ensure the organization’s financial health is sound, sustainable, and supportive of strategic initiatives.
• Approve and manage an annual budget that reflects the organization’s priorities, ensuring responsible financial stewardship and alignment with mission objectives.
• Oversee the financial management of the organization, utilizing data and metrics to make informed decisions that drive sustainable growth.
• Ensure that all programs and services are delivered efficiently, effectively, and aligned with the organization’s strategic goals.
• In collaboration with the Chief Operations Officer (COO), ensure operational excellence across all activities, maintaining alignment with the organization’s mission and values.
External Relations and Partnerships
• Serve as the primary liaison with Volunteers of America national headquarters to align organizational goals, share strategic insights, and ensure compliance with national policies and best practices. Cultivate a collaborative relationship with national leadership to support mission-driven initiatives and leverage resources and guidance that enhance local impact
• Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization, representing Volunteers of America Oregon to various stakeholders, including donors, partners, volunteers, and the wider community.
• Establish and maintain strong relationships with local, state, and national partners, including governmental agencies, ensuring the organization’s voice is heard on relevant issues.
• Actively engage with donors and the community to advance the mission and secure financial support, ensuring sustainability and growth of services.
• Build and maintain alliances with other nonprofits, government agencies, and key stakeholders to influence policy and create positive community impact.
Cultural and Organizational Leadership
• Foster a positive and inclusive organizational culture that reflects the mission and values of Volunteers of America Oregon.
• Promote a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect within the workforce and among all stakeholders, ensuring these principles are deeply embedded in the organization’s operations and programs.
• Lead initiatives to promote diversity in leadership, recruitment, and workforce development, ensuring the organization reflects the rich diversity of the community it serves.
• Serve as a champion of inclusion and belonging, ensuring that these values are integrated into every aspect of the organization.
Programmatic Excellence and Accountability
• Ensure that all programs and services are designed, implemented, and evaluated based on evidence-based practices and aligned with the organization’s mission and strategic goals.
• Work with the senior leadership team to develop and execute strategies for program expansion, ensuring relevance and responsiveness to community needs.
• Lead the continuous improvement of programs and services, ensuring high quality, measurable outcomes that demonstrate success and accountability.
• Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and contractual obligations, safeguarding the organization’s reputation and ensuring operational integrity.
Advocacy and Policy Influence
• Stay informed on local, state, and national policies affecting the nonprofit sector, advocating on behalf of the organization’s interests.
• Collaborate with other nonprofits, government agencies, and stakeholders to influence policy and drive systemic change to better serve the community.
• Position the organization as a thought leader in the field, leveraging partnerships and public advocacy to advance the mission.
Risk Management and Compliance
• Identify, assess, and manage organizational risks, ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
• Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets and reputation.
• Oversee safety and risk management practices to ensure a safe environment for employees, volunteers, and clients.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years of senior management experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector, with a proven track record of success in leading complex organizations.
• Demonstrated leadership in strategic planning, organizational development, and team leadership, with a strong ability to inspire and lead a diverse group of stakeholders.
• Strong financial management skills, including experience with budgeting, financial analysis, and revenue generation.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with a wide range of audiences.
• Experience building and maintaining relationships with community partners, donors, and government agencies.
• A deep understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of Volunteers of America Oregon.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and work independently with limited supervision.
• A strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, both internally within the organization and externally with partners and clients.
• Ability to travel as required to meet with donors, partners, and attend community events.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The position typically operates in a professional office environment, with some travel required to meet with donors, partners, and attend community events. The role requires the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
