OVERVIEW OF THE DIRECTOR, OREGON DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE ROLE:
The Director provides overall leadership and identifies the mission and goals of the Department, oversees and is responsible for all programs, operations, and administrative functions. The ideal candidate evaluates results in relation to the mission and makes changes/corrections as appropriate. The Director represents the Department and the State of Oregon in negotiations regarding international agricultural issues, with federal officials, and other local, state, international and industry officials. The Director also represents the Department to the Oregon legislature.

The Director serves as a policy advisor to and spokesman for the Governor in all matters relating to agriculture in Oregon and serves in a major leadership role for all Oregon agricultural interests, this involves managing the frequent conflicts of interest among a widely diverse group of impacted agencies, citizens, and industries. The ideal candidate serves as a representative of the Governor in determining direction and policy in areas that have critical economic impact on the State.

The Director, Oregon Department of Agriculture serves as a member of the state’s enterprise leadership team which provides policy direction on the enterprise of state government from personnel policy to information technology policy.

ESSENTIAL ATTRIBUTES OF THE DIRECTOR, OREGON DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE: 
  • A strong understanding of the most important agricultural issues facing Oregonians today, and a vision for how to improve upon those issues over the next five years
  • Ability and experience in inclusive leadership, including the ability to lead and work with a team of skilled, diverse, and motivated colleagues
  • Patience, perseverance, integrity, and empathy
  • Skills both at delegating, and in leading collaborative efforts
  • Ability to advocate effectively for actions that advance the mission of the agency before elected and appointed officials at the state and federal levels
  • Demonstrated commitment and measurable results in equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives 
  • A proven track record of navigating, impacting, and enacting state policy decisions, legislation, and regulatory actions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with first-class ethics and a high level of integrity.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience in the implementation of federal and/or state laws and policy
  • Ability and experience in working collaboratively with fellow state, federal, local, and tribal leaders, both to build strong working relationships and to advance ODA’s vision
  • Demonstrated experience leading strategic planning initiatives and program assessments

Education, Experience & Training
Nine years of management experience; OR six years of management experience and a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Natural Resources, or a related field
