Controller – NONPROFIT (Temporary, Part-Time – Hybrid | Portland, OR)
The Temporary Controller will provide strategic financial leadership and hands-on support for all core financial functions during a key transition period. This role ensures continued accuracy of accounting systems, financial reporting, and compliance with nonprofit standards, helping maintain a high level of service to justice-impacted communities.
This position works closely with the Leadership Team and supports the Finance Department in managing budget oversight, internal controls, and day-to-day operations. Strong communication, flexibility, and a collaborative mindset are essential in this team-oriented culture.

The Temporary Controller will provide strategic financial leadership and hands-on support for all core financial functions during a key transition period. This position works closely with the Leadership Team and supports the Finance Department in managing budget oversight, internal controls, and day-to-day operations. Strong communication, flexibility, and a collaborative mindset are essential in this team-oriented culture.
- Contract Duration: 6–7 Months (Coverage for Leave of Absence)
- Start Date: July 2025
- Location: Portland, OR (Hybrid – Primarily Remote)
- Schedule: 24–28 Hours/Week | Flexible Hours with Monday–Wednesday Focus
- Pay Range: $55.00 - $65.00/hr. DOE.
Financial Management & Oversight
- Oversee day-to-day accounting activities and ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit regulations.
- Monitor and approve journal entries, general ledger postings, and subledger integrity.
- Manage cash flow, approve disbursements, and initiate interbank transfers as needed.
- Review and reconcile monthly accounts, ensuring financial data accuracy.
- Maintain security settings and manage vendor profiles in financial systems.
- Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and reports.
- Assist with budget performance analysis, grant-related financial reporting, and proposal development.
- Provide strategic insights into the Leadership Team through regular financial updates.
- Ensure internal controls, processes, and policies are adhered to and improved as needed.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to resolve financial discrepancies and support organization-wide initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications for Controller:
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit sector experience strongly preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA certification is preferred but not required.
- Experience with fund accounting and managing federal, state, and local grants.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and nonprofit accounting software; experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge is a plus (training available).
- Deep understanding of GAAP, nonprofit financial compliance, and full-cycle accounting.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; ability to thrive in a collaborative, communicative environment.
- Demonstrated alignment with diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging (DEIJB) principles.
