ABOUT Unite Oregon
Unite Oregon/Unite Oregon Action was founded in 2002 in the response to anti-Muslim, immigrant, and refugee sentiment in the wake of 9/11. In 2016, the organization merged with a nonprofit based in rural, Southern Oregon, making Unite Oregon a truly statewide organization with decades of experience organizing immigrants, refugees, people of color, and low-income Oregonians to address racial and economic disparities and improve quality of life in our state. Today, Unite Oregon/Unite Oregon Action has four chapters and 22,000 members and supporters across the state.
Led by people of color, immigrants and refugees, rural communities, and people experiencing poverty, Unite Oregon works across Oregon to build a unified intercultural movement for justice.
The Executive Director will be the leader of an influential social and racial justice nonprofit that organizes communities across many languages, cultures, and identities for a more equitable Oregon. They will lead a growing organization of 35 diverse staff who are 80% immigrant, refugee, and Black, Indigenous, People of Color. The ideal leader will be an effective and dynamic communicator, strong manager, and innovative strategist who has a passion for our mission and can identify opportunities to support the organization to continue to grow and reach its full potential.
The position is responsible for cultivating successful collaborations across the organization’s programs, building, and sustaining cross-cultural coalitions and partnerships with a wide range of nonprofit and governmental partners; providing legislative policy leadership; and engaging our 22,000 members in our organizing, civic engagement, leadership development, and policy and systems change work. The Executive Director will also oversee a new and growing c4 program, Unite Oregon Action, and will report to both the c3 and c4 Board.
Leveraging connections and skills from throughout the organization and region to strengthen both the initiatives and the organization, the Executive Director will ensure that Unite Oregon’s mission is upheld.
- Develop and implement a strategic and well-balanced fundraising program that addresses the needs of the organization and ensures organizational sustainability.
- Develop formal mechanisms for and maintain ongoing practices of deep community engagement and relationship building to ensure that the organization’s strategies (community organizing, leadership development, civic engagement, policy advocacy, and direct service) are executed.
- Leverage a working knowledge of Oregon’s civic and political system to maximize bridging opportunities and community organizing opportunity to increase impact.
- Oversee and, as appropriate, directly engage in initiative activities (e.g., policy work, campaigns, partnerships, leadership development cohorts, convenings)
- Continually survey the local, regional, and national landscape to identify emerging innovations in racial justice, policy opportunities, and trends.
- Lead the development of new strategies and approaches that address economic and social justice inequities and the disenfranchised communities impacted by them.
- Maintain a strong external presence in the local/state community, participating in relevant local policy meetings and legislative activity.
- Develop and maintain strategic relationships with policy makers, nonprofit leaders, public and private stakeholders, and funders; building reciprocal trust with community and justice advocates and leaders; serve as a facilitator, convener, and connector to further the organization’s strategic goals.
- Collaborate with the organization’s staff to cultivate and support a strong practice of engaging on critical organizational goals. Provide guidance and oversight of the staff and leverage staff experience and insights.
- Offer personal interest and commitment to working in a diverse and inclusive work environment that places a high value on equity.
- Participate in promoting a positive workplace culture of collaboration, innovation, and respect. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish effective working relationships in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment.
- Effectively engage with underrepresented and disenfranchised communities on the importance of social and economic justice.
- Understand the historical and political impact that inequitable policy has had on BIPOC and immigrant/refugee communities.
PREFERRED COMPETENCIES SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Significant and distinguished work experience (10+ years) in fields relevant to non-profit leadership, racial justice, and policy advocacy.
- Demonstrated understanding of lived experiences of diverse Oregonians and strong relationships with relevant communities and nonprofit partners.
- Strong analysis of disparities experienced by BIPOC communities and of structures and systems that impede equitable policy. Ability to identify high-impact leverage points to achieve durable systems change.
- Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into action, with a proven record of success in developing and implementing innovative strategies and solutions with the engagement of others.
- Significant experience in successful development and fundraising activity. Proven knowledge of best practice and methodology leading to strong donor partnerships.
- Working knowledge of best, promising, and emerging practices and innovations nationally, regionally, and locally that advance underrepresented community equity efforts.
- Exceptional team collaborative leadership and facilitative management skills with an understanding of the difference between leadership and management – and the ability to exercise both.
- A demonstrated willingness to reiterate a strategy and approach in partnership with the executive board, with the ability to course correct as necessary.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate knowledge and learning, and the capacity to effectively use research and evaluation to understand policy antithetical to the mission of Unite Oregon.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively with a broad range of stakeholders to address complex racial equity and immigration policy, or legal challenges.
- A willingness to challenge conventional thinking coupled with the ability to collaborate effectively and encourage dialogue.
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills, interpersonal awareness, and excellent listening skills; a communication style that reflects clarity, authenticity, transparency, executive leadership, and approachability.
- Ability to travel on an as-need basis.
