Senior Corporate Communications Consultant

Reporting to the Corporate Communications Senior Director, this position will be responsible for safety communications for the company and its product. It will also lead proactive messaging on community partnerships news and be specifically responsible for educating customers, the public, news media and emergency responders on natural gas safety and our client’s work with community organizations.

Location: Portland, OR (Hybrid)
Salary: 95-110K (DOE)
Accepting Candidates in Oregon and Washington


Key Responsibilities for Senior Corporate Communications Consultant/Public Information Officer:

Proactive Safety Communications:
  • Oversee the company’s public safety awareness program
    • Maintain and update safety materials. Work with outside agencies and consultants to create all materials such as brochures, mailings, and advertisements.
    • Execute on the distribution of all safety materials through various communications channels.
    • Track, respond and report to the Public Utilities Commission () on all public and customer safety communication efforts
  • ???????Lead the company’s Gas Safety Education program, company sponsored Get Ready events, and be present at safety or emergency events.
  • Write press releases and website copy; post social media touts; produce videos; and act as a spokesperson on topics related to natural gas safety.
  • Build and cultivate relationships with the local news media, fire department PIOs, and other PIOs from applicable agencies.

Reactive Safety Communications:
  • Handle media pager duty on a rotational basis.
  • Respond to reporter requests, conduct interviews yourself or arrange to provide information or spokespeople.
  • Complete FEMA PIO training for incident response.
  • Contribute to the company’s crisis plans and preparation.
  • Responsible for proactive corporate communications about energy efficiency, cooking with gas, corporate giving, and home shows. Able to handle live shots on TV and radio interviews on all topics.

Proactive Community Partnerships Communications:
  • Pitch local media on community partnership efforts, and client sponsored community events and initiatives.
  • Work with community partnerships and event sponsorship teams to stay abreast of client’s participation and support of events and community organizations.
  • Coordinate related social media content placement with company’s social media channel lead.


Requirements/Qualifications for Key Senior Corporate Communications Consultant/Public Information Officer:
  • 8+ years of corporate communications environment/public relations.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and being on camera.
  • Must be self-directed, team focused, and results oriented.
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Public Relations, Communications or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience in media relations, crisis communications, or issues management required.
  • Requires excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to gain trust quickly and to maintain confidentiality and credibility within the company and when dealing with the media. 
  • Proven experience with corporate reputation management, brand reinforcement and stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience in the energy or natural gas industry a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to physically access construction and other worksite locations as required.
