The Assistant Controller will oversee the accounting operations for Relay Resources and its subsidiary companies, managing functions such as general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, inventory, payroll, and donations. This role is responsible for period-end closing activities, including general ledger account reconciliation and analysis, consolidation, and intercompany account reconciliations. Additional duties include preparing year-end audit schedules (PBC), assisting with the annual budget preparation, analyzing, and reporting budget variances, and providing financial analysis and support to management as needed.
The Assistant Controller will work directly with a small team of accounting staff, offering technical accounting guidance and support. This role also serves as the lead technical user and subject matter expert for the Abila accounting system. Presence at the worksite during business hours, particularly during month-end close, is an essential function of this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for general ledger accounting, timely period-end close for multiple entities, and adherence to Relay policies, procedures, and closing schedule.
- Prepare, record, and analyze monthly journal entries; maintain general and subsidiary ledgers to ensure accuracy and completeness of revenue and expenses, including payroll and benefit journals, accruals, and reconciliations. Communicate adjustments as needed.
- Perform monthly reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts for Relay, Relay Enterprises, and Airport Way Solar.
- Prepare and maintain prepaid amortization schedules, record adjustments as necessary.
- Oversee monthly close activities (e.g., A/P, A/R, account reconciliations) to ensure timely close; provide guidance to accounting personnel, assist with process improvements, and document procedures.
- Communicate proactively with the Controller/Director of Finance on the status of accounting close, critical deadlines, and projects.
- Review actual expenses versus budget monthly; support business unit and department managers in analyzing variances and implementing cost control measures.
- Prepare and distribute consolidated financial statements and various monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, both internally and externally.
- Manage, improve, and document accounting procedures, processes, and internal controls to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Compile IRS form 990 information and schedules for Relay Resource and Relay Resource Enterprises.
- Provide system administration and maintenance for the chart of accounts, ensuring proper setup and functionality.
- Ensure timely completion of audit support work; coordinate with the Controller/Director of Finance on audit-related issues and resolution.
- Conduct general ledger account reviews to ensure accuracy and proper expense classification; provide guidance on coding and accounting entries.
- Monitor accounts receivable/payable; prepare expense analysis and support profitability assessments, implementation of cost control measures, and efficiency improvements as requested.
- Assist the Payroll team with month-end entries and accruals when needed.
- Manage and develop the A/P, A/R, and social enterprise accounting staff, ensuring effective communication and adherence to close deadlines and processes.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred but not required.
- Minimum of eight years’ experience in accounting with demonstrated increasing responsibility.
- Strong working experience with GAAP and technical accounting principles, laws, and regulations; ability to quickly learn and adapt to new regulations.
- Demonstrated success in advanced financial accounting and reporting.
- Highly detailed, analytical, and accurate with proven ability to synthesize and communicate technical accounting, reporting, and compliance requirements.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Access.
- Deep competency with business financial and reporting systems (ERP, database, and Business Intelligence tools); financial system conversion experience a plus.
- Ability to communicate complex technical matters effectively with technical and non-technical audiences alike.
- Exceptionally organized and detail-oriented.
- Able to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment.
- Capable of establishing strong working relationships with team members, including the ability to leverage team strengths and shore up areas for development.
- Ability to prioritize independently while managing multiple competing priorities.
