Motus Recruiting and Staffing is proud to partner with Relay Resources in the search for a Mission Investment and Community Engagement Director. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced fundraising leader to build a new philanthropy function from the ground up. Working closely with the VP, Disability Inclusion, executive leadership, and Board of Directors, this leader will establish a multi-year fundraising strategy, develop donor and community partnerships, and create the systems and processes needed to grow sustainable contributed revenue.

The Mission Investment and Community Engagement Director will help expand the resources and relationships that support Relay’s mission to cultivate meaningful work for people with disabilities, translating community investment into lasting impact.
Job Location: Portland, OR
DIRECT HIRE!
Salary: $135k – 145k (DOE)
Work Type: Primarily remote; office attendance as needed. Local travel throughout the Portland/Vancouver area to meet with donors, community partners, and other stakeholders. Some evening and weekend events required. Strong preference for candidates with roots in Oregon/Washington.
Fundraising Strategy & Revenue Generation
- Build and execute multi-year fundraising strategies aligned with annual and long-term revenue goals.
- Lead fundraising campaigns, prospect research, donor acquisition, retention, and stewardship initiatives.
- Develop and manage a portfolio of major donors, investors, and prospective supporters.
- Establish fundraising infrastructure, including a technology stack, pipeline management, performance metrics, and leadership reporting.
- Cultivate lasting relationships with individual donors, corporate sponsors, foundations, granting organizations, and community partners.
- Plan and represent Relay at outreach, education, fundraising, and donor engagement events.
- Identify sponsorship, investment, grant, and other funding opportunities that advance Relay’s mission.
- Collaborate across departments to strengthen community visibility and engagement.
- Partner with the VP, Disability Inclusion and Human Resources to design and scale the new fund development function, including roles, processes, and staffing plans.
- As the function grows, hire, coach, mentor, and develop philanthropy professionals.
- Create a collaborative, inclusive, accountable culture grounded in Relay’s core competencies.
- Partner with executive leadership and the Board of Directors to establish goals and align fundraising priorities with organizational needs.
- Equip board members to participate in donor cultivation and fundraising through materials, guidance, and joint donor engagement.
- Develop thoughtful donor recognition, engagement, and reporting practices that deepen long-term relationships.
- Oversee the philanthropy budget and track fundraising results to inform strategic decisions.
- Lead annual impact reporting, combining data and storytelling to demonstrate outcomes to donors and community stakeholders.
- Maintain compliance with donor intent, applicable requirements, and ethical fundraising standards.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Requirements:
- 7–10 years of progressive fundraising leadership experience, preferably within a complex nonprofit organization with significant major gifts activity.
- Demonstrated success securing and stewarding six- and seven-figure gifts.
- Experience building fundraising strategies, organizational systems, and processes from the ground up.
- Strong knowledge of donor cultivation, stewardship, corporate partnerships, grants, and revenue generation.
- Ability to engage donors, board members, community partners, and executive leadership through exceptional communication and relationship-building.
- Strategic planning, financial management, analytical, and performance measurement skills.
- Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and talent development capabilities.
- Strong commitment to disability inclusion and Relay’s mission and values.
- Bachelor’s degree, CFRE, advanced degree, or equivalent experience preferred.

The successful Mission Investment and Community Engagement Director will be both a strategic fundraiser and a hands-on builder. They will bring the vision to establish a development function where one has not previously existed, paired with the practical ability to cultivate relationships, develop a pipeline, implement systems, and translate ambitious goals into measurable action. They will be comfortable working closely with leadership and the board while laying the foundation for a team that can grow over time.
