Senior Technical Writer – Safety Documentation
Our client, a leading Pacific Northwest utility provider committed to public service and environmental preservation, is looking for a Senior Technical Writer for their Vancouver, Washington location. In this role you will support the Safety Organization Internal Operations, providing essential documentation and technical writing expertise. You will collaborate closely with subject matter experts, stakeholders, and various department representatives to draft, edit, and maintain safety management system documentation, policies, procedures, reports, and communications. Additionally, this position includes transcription of meeting correspondence and organizing agendas and action items for assigned committees.

Pay Range: $48.00 – $52.00/HR
Location: Hybrid in Vancouver, WA (Onsite 3 days per week)
Key Responsibilities for Senior Technical Writer:
- Collaborate with team members, SMEs, and stakeholders to gather and understand documentation requirements.
- Draft, edit, and finalize technical documents that meet agency standards and audience needs.
- Conduct technical interviews with SMEs to obtain accurate information for documentation.
- Assist in the maintenance and regular updates of safety manuals, including SOHM, APM, and CSHRPS.
- Gather and clarify user requirements for complex business systems and procedures.
- Communicate technical concepts effectively to a range of business experts.
- Propose and document improvements to operating procedures.
- Research and analyze workflow and safety processes for enhancements in accessibility and usability.
- Organize and publish safety program information, including policies, procedures, and reference materials.
- Edit and standardize materials prepared by others to align with agency standards.
- Review materials for accuracy and make recommendations on content, format, and scope.
- Select and incorporate visuals, such as diagrams and charts, to illustrate technical content.
- Write clear, logical instructions by detailing high-level information and organizing documentation.
- Coordinate document distribution, file management, and compliance with security standards.
- Attend meetings to provide professional note-taking, recording key discussions, decisions, and action items.
- Distribute draft meeting notes, solicit feedback, and provide final notes to attendees on time.
- Manage records and ensure adherence to information security and governance policies.
- Ensure documents align with safety consensus standards, collaborating closely with SMEs and stakeholders.
- Maintain and update a structured filing system, ensuring all official records are stored accurately for audit and compliance purposes.
- Support NFB in organizing and managing agendas, deadlines, and action items for committees, ensuring timely follow-through on key initiatives.
Requirements/Qualification for Senior Technical Writer:
- An associate or bachelor’s degree in journalism, technical writing, safety & occupational health or a closely- elated technical discipline is preferred.
- 6 years of experience is required with an applicable bachelor’s degree.
- 8 years of experience is required with an applicable associate degree.
- 10 years of experience and formal training (college level communications, English, technical writing) or related coursework is required. Resume must include a detailed list of the specific classes being claimed as “qualifying”.
- Experience should be consistent with the specific requirements of technical writing.
- Proficiency in the use of the full Microsoft Office Suite applications for the purposes of creating Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, Visio diagrams, charts, workflows, diagrams, and various miscellaneous materials into a professional published form is required.
- Demonstrated experience with technical writing in a safety and occupational health environment is preferred.
- Effective technical interviewing skills are preferred.
- Advanced ability to organize and present information in various forms such as textual, graphical, and statistical is preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of safety and occupational health environment, sufficient to explain technical issues to a disparate range of technical and non-technical clients is preferred.
- Knowledge of various safety and occupational health consensus standards and guidelines is preferred..
